Media release: Onwards and Upwards: Norfolk Archaeological Trust celebrates National Lottery grant to create a sustainable future for monuments in its care

Norfolk Archaeological Trust has received a National Lottery grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Made possible by National Lottery players, the grant of £178,500 will fund the research and development the Trust needs to continue caring for Norfolk’s archaeological sites into the future.

Caroline Davison, Trust Director, said ‘The Trust has a long history of conserving monuments at risk in Norfolk. However, the challenges of possibly reduced funding after Brexit, plus the opportunities arising from increasing volunteer support, require us to look again at our business model, so as to be able to sustain our current work and care for additional monuments at risk in the future.’

The Norfolk Archaeological Trust looks after ten archaeological sites in Norfolk which are open to the public, including St Benet’s Abbey, Burgh Castle Fort and Caistor Roman Town. Thanks to National Lottery players this project will enable the Trust to work closely with external consultants to research and review potential new sources of income, and develop a sustainable 10-year Business Plan. The research will also look at ways of improving public access to Trust sites, and providing more opportunities and training for volunteers. The project will include a review of procedures for the recruitment and appointment of trustees, and provide a training programme for implementation of the Business Plan.

A full-time Volunteer co-ordinator post, and a part time Rural Sites Manager post will be created to support implementation of the project.

Commenting on the award, Chairman of the Trust Peter Griffiths, said: ‘We’re extremely grateful to the National Lottery for supporting the Trust during this important transitional phase in our mission to care for some of Norfolk’s most significant heritage sites.’

The project starts in April and will continue until Autumn 2019.
